3 films to definitely watch:
The Mist: genuinely creepy, well made and claustrophobic. Proof positive that a decent director can still make a decent film from Stephen King's work.
Kidulthood: Clever, pretentious and cynical - all in a good way. It makes for bleak viewing, but is compelling viewing for presenting urban living in a realistic, striking way. And also manages to do so in a way that avoids Daily Mail style hysteria.
They Live: Well directed film that mixes action with horror with sci-fi to produce a commendably stupid result. Worth it for the way the aliens look, and for the line about kicking arse and bubblegum.
2 films to definitely avoid:
You Don't Mess With The Zohan: You don't watch this film either. A comedy that manages to be offensive in a really, really bad way at the same time as failing to be funny. The cinematic equivalent of eating rancid fish.
Dogville: Clever, pretentious and cynical - all in a very bad way. It really does leave the viewer in need of a hefty dose of Prozac; and that is just to cope with the 2 hour, 50 minute run time. The sort of film you are pleased you watched (or rather made it through), but would rather pluck out your own eyeballs than have to see again.
That is all.
