He won't be missed

I know it won't be an original comment, but good riddance to the bastard. Let's hope that the equally odious Castro goes the same way soon.

I believe the US embargo of Cuba is nearly as old as I am. Whilst I have no doubt that Castro is a pretty ruthless dictator using the cuban people as his own communist laboratory, I have often wondered how much suffering by the ordianry people of cuba has been inflicted by the US embargo. Since it obviously ddin't work to bring down the regime, presumably they keep it up as a punishment for Castro's hob-nobbing with the Soviets. Is there any point to it now?

Inevitably sanctions do hurt the people rather than the rulers - North Korea being perhaps the best example - I think the point is that sanctions should encourage the people to get rid of their despots and in doing so get rid of the need for sanctions. But since sanctions have been in place in Cuba since the Kennedy administration it is probably time to acknowledge that the plan didn't work...
