From the chap producing a coin to celebrate Prince Philip's 90th:
Sculptor Mark Richards, who designed the coin, said: "The challenge for me, in creating this design, was to capture a man who gives great support to the monarch and the country, while remaining largely in the background. What, seriously, the "dignity, wisdom and experience" of this man? I think Richards' description is stretching credibility well beyond breaking point...
"Therefore I have focused on a close-up of his face with all its accumulated dignity, wisdom and experience."

Perhaps the excruciating humour of this man.
Actually (and this is only a pet theory of mine, with no evidence), I think they're not gaffes at all, and he knows exactly what he's doing.
Why does he do it? I like to think that it's not because he's racist, but because he enjoys winding up the PC brigade.
As I said, only a theory...
Actually, I think it is being generous to see the man as anything other than what he is - a rather reactionary old bigot. The best excuse for his opinions is that he is very much of his generation - but that doesn't excuse his frequemt excursions into racism.
