The BBC writes that people are both drinking more than they thought they were, and more than they should.

  1. It makes you wonder where the 'intelligence' in an intelligent guess actually is..

  2. Its worse than that. I raised this issue when playing golf in a competition. It turns out that one of my playing partners is a retired PhD who used to work for a well known drugs firm.

He said he knew the liver team at, IIRC, St Barts who were asked to come up with a safe drink limit. Bearing in mind that at the time wine was much weaker they reckoned the average man could drink two bottles a day. The Govt was having none of that and sent back their response to try again. One battle? No. Well it will have to be a couple of glasses then.

OK, its hearsay but I have played with him a few times since then and have no reason to doubt his integrity. Whereas I have every reason to doubt the motives and integrity of our politicians and health lobbyists.

Erm, there's no real comment policy other than "don't libel anyone" and "don't use the comment section to try to sell your products". If you do either, I will delete the comments without warning. Otherwise, you can pretty much write what you want.
